Eckerd Corporation
Eckerd
Corp., a subsidiary of JCPenney, Inc., is a drug store retailer
based in Largo, Fla. It sells prescription drugs, health
and beauty products, seasonal merchandise and convenience
items for personal and home needs through its approximately
2,640 locations in 20 states. Annual sales for 2001 were
more than $13.85 billion.
Retek Training Needs
Eckerd
Corp. implemented six RetekTM modules: FoundationTM,
ItemTM, Purchasing and Inventory Transaction ProcessingTM,
ReplenishmentTM, Store OperationsTM
and Retek Demand ForecastingTM. The implementation
process lasted three years. A store pilot program started
in Spring 2002 and rollout to the stores is scheduled to begin
in the summer of 2002.
Because
of its deep Retek and retail expertise, TEC was selected by
Eckerd early in the implementation planning process to provide
leadership in the creation of the training strategy, training
program development, and delivery. Training was written and
conducted for the corporate users and store training teams
in more than 20 critical merchandising, administrative, store
planning, financial, and inventory management functions as
well as Pharmacy Purchasing and Administration, Logistics,
Help Desk, e-commerce, and more. Training for Store Operations
began in Spring 2002 and will be completed in conjunction
with the rollout. Approximately 10,000 Eckerd associates will
complete the TEC training program.
Challenges
Eckerd
took several steps to operate its business more efficiently
and profitably. The Retek implementation affected a majority
of merchandising and operational functions in store and headquarter
offices. The company also introduced new business processes
as well as new perpetual inventory and store replenishment
applications that int developed
a customized training program with:erface with a great many
legacy system applications. Additionally, Eckerd identified
a network of associates to both train and offer post-implementation
support to the large group of associates who needed to learn
the new systems.

new role as trainers. TEC met or exceeded every scheduled
deadline for documentation and training delivery.
Results
Eckerd successfully implemented the selected Retek modules
in April 2002. Associates were prepared for the new system
and have accepted it well. "We chose TEC because of its proven
track record," said Doug Sheasley, VP and Quantum Leap Project
Manager, Eckerd Corp. "Other retailers have seen success with
this solution, experiencing significant improvements in their
go-live process. We expect the same. No other provider has
the retail and Retek product knowledge that this team does."
